Dear Jackie
As far as I understand the task team or working group has enough people with health background and as you know that Health Promotion does not address health in terms of disease, illness, medication and health education only, in our last meeting it was agreed that there is a need to recruit partners from other sectors. Sectors in this regard refer to different government departments such as agriculture, education, social development, trade and industry and etc. Please take note that the HPF is still at its conceptualization stage and it will take long before we can have this new body standing on its feet.
As for subscription to the news letter, Annette Gerritsen and Mandy Salomo can be in a position to explain the process. I am hopeful that Annette will take this further.
Regards

Dear Maggie

I am a lecturer in the School of Health Sciences at Monash South Africa - a campus of Monash Australia. I am lecturing Health Promotion (second year Public Health students) this semester and have been involved in HP for a very long time...I've been working with the NCAS and Soul City in the past and would like to get involved again. I also worked in Health Promotion (Gauteng Health Department) for many years - Assistant Director).

How can I become part of this forum and can I please subscribe to the newsletter? (subscription above didn't work.)

Kind regards

It is worth noting that in the lead up to the UN Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases, there was considerable Civil Society advocacy for a stronger position on the role of industry - in light of the role of profit-making corporates in generating the huge burden of disease from NCDs worldwide, and the enormous potential for conflict of interest - as corporates and corporate-aligned scientists have been seen to have influence in key policy making forums in which WHO or UN agencies have been central.
Whether the Summit's political declaration achieves a satisfactory resolution of this matter remains to be seen. But it is clear that the Declaration paid scant attention to this question - in fact making little clear statement regarding the adverse influence of corporates (other than for tobacco products) or on measures to limit conflict of interest.
It is particularly in the area of NCDs that conflict of interest looms large, given the role of consumption of food and beverages in the generation of NCDs.
It is rather surprising that in all the public comment on the the Summit resolution, relatively little attention has been paid to this issue, save from the vocal health advocacy sector. One wonders how much progress can be made unless the economic power underlying the NCD epidemic is tackled, and whether the UN really had such a fundamental shift in mind when the Declaration was adopted?
