Editorial team

The editorial team of the PHASA newsletter consists of the following PHASA members:

 Tladi Ledibane

Tladi Ledibane graduated at the Wits Medical School in 1999. He did his internship at Natalspruit Hospital in 2000, and his community service at Potchefstoom Hospital in 2001. He was in general practice in Wolmaransstad from 2002 to 2005. He joined the North West Department of Health as the ARV clinic doctor in 2006 where he helped establish the ARV clinic. In 2007, he was appointed Clinical Manager of Ganyesa District Hospital in the rural North West, the following year he took up a post as clinical manager of National District Hospital until 2010. During his tenure at National District Hospital he completed a Diploma in Public Health: Hospital Management at Wits. Currently he is a Public Health Medicine Registrar at University of the Free State. His interests are TB research and Health management.

 

 Ehimario Igumbor

Ehimario Igumbor is an an Epidemiologist faculty member in the School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape (UWC) where he contributes to the post-graduate training programmes in Public Health including supervising Masters and Doctoral students. His research interests include eco-social determinants of chronic non-communicable diseases, burden of disease analyses, routine large-scale health surveys and health sciences teaching/learning. He joined the UWC School of Public Health in January 2007 after teaching for three years in the Walter Sisulu University Medical School. He currently Chairs the Masters in Public Health (MPH) Special Interest Group of PHASA and served on the scientific committee of the 2011 conference.

 

Waasila Jassat

Waasila Jassat has just received the qualifications of FCPHM from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and MMed (Community Health) from the University of the Witwatersrand. After leaving the Wits Public Health Medicine registrar programme, she has taken a post as Senior Programme Manager Health Systems Strengthening at the Health Systems Trust, based in Johannesburg. Her research interests are primarily centred on health system effectiveness, and she also has a passion for women’s health issues. She would love to contribute to improving the organisation of health service delivery and ensuring that the health system is more responsive to its users.

 

Annette Gerritsen

Annette Gerritsen was professionally trained in epidemiology in The Netherlands. She obtained her PhD from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, reporting on a randomised controlled clinical trial on the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. After that she has been involved in research studies focussing on the health and health care use of refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants in the Netherlands. In 2007 she moved to South Africa to work as a senior lecturer in epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Venda, Thohoyandou, where she coordinated the Master of Public Health program. In 2008 she founded Epi Result, a company specializing in design, analysis and reporting of epidemiological studies. Her research areas of interest include: infectious diseases (HIV, TB, malaria, diarrhoea), migration and health, with her main interest being the research methodology.

 

Nomathemba Sibanda

Nomathemba Sibanda is currently a Masters in Public Health (MPH) student at the University of Pretoria. Her first degree focused on Applied Mathematics and she developed a mathematical model on the role that sexual debut has on the transmission dynamics of HIV. She has been a research officer with the Biomedical Research and Training Institute for more than two years. Her work there included documenting the Best Practices in the Provision of Psychosocial Support among Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Zimbabwe. She has special interests in the health of populations, specifically non-communicable diseases, ethics, policy development and monitoring and evaluation (policy assessment).
